Mountaineering shoes for expeditions and high mountain tops

Mountaineering Shoes

Whether you are mountaineering at home in the alps or are on your way to wild mountain tops in remote valleys of the Himalaya: If you truly are a mountaineering enthusiast with a passion for alpine terrains, mountaineering shoes are a must! Apart from the logistics, the choice of equipment and the right clothing for your expedition are also part of the planning. Especially the mountaineering boots are important when crossing the mark of 4000 meters.
Boots for mountaineering, glacier touring and expeditions are designed for extreme conditions. Temperatures below freezing, tough mixed terrain consisting of rock, ice and snow challenge the roped party and the equipment alike. That literally goes for anything from head to toe or headlamps and glacier glasses to functional socks and glacier shoes respectively.

A membrane will protect the foot from moisture and water.

Brand manufacturers such as La Sportiva, Scarpa and Salewa do not take chances when it comes to toughness and wearing comfort of their mountaineering shoes. To achieve that, high-end materials are used and solidly processed.
The upper material is made of leather or abrasion-resistant synthetic fibers. The core of all shoes that are crampon-compatible is the Gore-Tex membrane and the sole. The shoe including the shaft is waterproof and breathable.

Crampon-compatible or partly crampon compatible - it depends

The structure of the soles is clearly more solid than it is on light hiking shoes or approach shoes. The sole itself has a decent tread and - similar to winter and summer tires for your car - a rubber compound optimized for cold temperatures. A Vibram sole is perfectly adjusted to the conditions you meet on the mountains and is therefore used in mountaineering shoes of many manufacturers!
Shoes that are crampon-compatible are the right pick when you want to go ice climbing, glacier touring and mountaineering. Without crampons and ice screws you will not get very far, at least not safely. If you can leave the crampons at home and ice cleats are enough to cross a short snow field, you can pick partly crampon-compatible shoes as well.
