Climb safely with a durable climbing rope

Climbing ropes

It's important to be safe whilst climbing, which is why you need to have a high-quality climbing rope with you. Up until the 1960s, ropes were the greatest safety risk when climbing, but thanks to modern rope fibres and manufacturing techniques, climbing ropes now provide optimal safety. So, don't forget to grab your climbing rope before heading out for your climb!

What makes a good rope

Every alpinist needs an excellent climbing rope because their life may depend on it. A rope must comply with certain requirements in order to offer adequate protection in all kinds of situations. A good rope must be extremely durable and have a very high tensile strength. Climbing ropes must also be durable enough to prevent excessive rope wear when coming into contact with rocks, carabiners or quickdraws. In the event of a fall, climbing ropes should be able to reduce the impact force on your body.

Climbing ropes for different purposes

There are many different types of climbing ropes to choose from. You may be overwhelmed at first by all your choices, but when looking at the purpose and your requirements, you’ll quickly find the right climbing rope.

Single ropes are the most used climbing ropes of all, and with a diameter between 9mm and 11mm, they’re also the thickest. Single ropes are powerful enough to hold a lead fall. As for half ropes, they have a smaller diameter between 8mm to 9mm, making them a little lighter than single ropes. These require you to use the traditional half rope technique. One advantage they have over single ropes is the ability to use the full length for an abseil. Lastly, there are twin ropes, which are the thinnest of all ropes with a diameter varying between 7mm and 8mm. These must always be hooked in together. Their light weight makes them ideal for tours that require you to have lightweight equipment.
