There are so many different facets, opportunities and challenges related to sustainability. There’s hardly any other industry in such a dilemma as the online outdoor sector. Nature is our home, yet we send packages all over Europe. How can those two things go together? It became clear to us after several discussions with "Fridays for Future" activists in summer 2019 that we should question our previous actions. This includes transparent communication with our customers. You can find out more about where we come from, our future steps, the SCIENCE BASED TARGETS initiative and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Our Focus

We as a company are seeking to become more environmentally friendly. As a result, we’ve set up two goals for ourselves that we’d like to reach in the coming years. These goals are part of the
17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
adapted in 2015 in the UN Agenda 2030. As an online retailer, we can have a positive impact and believe that we can play an active role in environmental protection. We’ve decided to focus on the following two SDGs:

SDG 12 | RESOURCE CONSERVATION
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

SDG 13 | CLIMATE ACTION
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Where we are from
This topic is not entirely new to us. We use 100% green electricity at our different sites and our administration has a photovoltaic system. We’ve also managed to reduce our carbon footprint per parcel shipped by investing in box folding machines in 2017 to reduce the amount of air in each parcel. We recycle the waste we generate and have switched to an electric vehicle fleet.
As we’ve become more and more involved with the issue of climate protection, it quickly became clear that more can and must be done. But, the following question arose: how can we reduce emissions that we have little to no control over?
The first step was to retroactively calculate our CO2 emissions for the years since our foundation in 2006. Every year we create a carbon footprint balance sheet in order to measure, compensate and gradually reduce our emissions.

WHERE WE ARE HEADED
Of course, CO2 offsetting is merely the first step of many on this path towards more climate protection at Bergfreunde. We continuously work on reducing our own CO2 emissions. We will also focus more on carboard and packing materials and continue to add information to our products to minimise the amount of returns as much as we can.
With our commitment, we would like to set an example for the outdoor industry and hope that many companies will follow suit. After all, everyone has to make a contribution. Only then can we make a real difference.

SCIENCE BASED TARGETS initiative
We take the issue of climate change very seriously and we strive to make a real positive impact. To do this, we had to create a reliable foundation for our goals and have them externally audited. After a thorough review of various certifications and programs, we decided to join the SCIENCE BASED TARGETS initiative (SBTi). We’ve set science-based targets that are in line with the Paris Agreement.
More specifically, we are committed to the following goals: reducing our emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 70% by 2030 compared to 2019 and ensuring that 75% of our suppliers set ambitious, science-based targets by 2026. These have been officially validated by the SBTi in September 2021. We are now starting to implement various projects to achieve our targets.
We want to reduce our emissions to a minimum and contribute to the fight against global warming.
What exactly is the SBTi? The SBTi was developed by leading climate and environmental protection organisations to support companies on a scientific basis in limiting their emissions. The SBTi is a collaboration between the CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
