Stay on the safe side with a high-quality climbing helmet

Climbing Helmets

Adventuring through the mountains holds many dangers and risks. From ice and falling rocks to falling and dropping your equipment, accidents are bound to happen at any time. Modern climbing helmets protect your head, provide safety and prevent accidents, so your chance of injury whilst climbing is greatly reduced. A climbing helmet is an essential piece of equipment for all climbers. As the saying goes, “the brain is the most important muscle for climbing."

I need a helmet, but what is good helmet?

Good climbing helmets must meet some important requirements in order to protect your head as effectively as possible. Climbing helmets should fit well, and they shouldn’t interfere with climbing. Comfort is often underestimated, not only should the climbing helmet provide safety, but it should also be very comfortable. A helmet pressing against your head can take the joy out of even the most beautiful climbs. Another absolute must is stability. In a worst-case scenario, a helmet may need to save your life, so safety is essential. All helmets have to undergo standardized testing before they can be approved as a climbing helmet. The test entails dropping a five-kilo weight onto the helmet from two meters above. This ensures that the climbing helmet can protect you from falling objects. Climbing helmets are also checked for their impact absorption coming from the front, from behind and from the sides. Only once the helmet passes the tests can they be sold as climbing helmets.

What types of climbing helmets are there?

First up there's the hardshell climbing helmet. As the name suggests, these climbing helmets consist of a hard outer shell. The shock-absorbing effect is carried out by a system of straps on the inside. Then, there are hard foam helmets, which are super lightweight. Their foam deforms upon impact to absorb the energy of the fall, similar to the crumple zone on a car. As for hybrid helmets, they combine the properties of hard foam and hardshell helmets. These climbing helmets have a thin outer shell and shock-absorbing foam on the inside. Finally, there are climbing helmets specially tailored to women or kids. As with all other types of helmets, it should be replaced after a fall or after coming into contact with falling rocks. Only then can optimal protection be guaranteed!
