Reviews overview
This is what customers from around the world say:
I purchased the Hamax Children’s Bike Trailer expecting a reliable, all-weather solution for transporting my child. Unfortunately, the product fell short of its advertised purpose due to significant design flaws that compromise its suitability for use in wet conditions or on gravel surfaces.
My Daughter’s Experience:
During our first use of the trailer in the rain, my daughter, seated on the right side, was sprayed with water throughout the journey due to a gap in the front wheel housing. By the end of the ride, her clothing was soaked, covered in debris and she was visibly uncomfortable. This is far from the level of protection expected from this type of product. The consistent exposure to water and debris not only ruined the outing but also raised concerns about the trailer’s suitability for transporting children safely and comfortably. For context this is our second bike trailer as we already own a Qeridoo Kidgoo and have been very happy with it.
Key Issues:
1. Design Flaw: A gap around the front wheel housing allows water, gravel, and debris to enter the cabin. Despite the inclusion of a rain cover, this gap leaves this section of the trailer particularly exposed, leading to significant water ingress during wet weather. On my specific unit, the gap on one side is wider than the other. While I cannot confirm that this fault affects all models, this disparity appears consistent with other units based on ‘front-on’ images showing the front wheel mount location.
2. Safety Risks: The gap also allows small stones and debris to be thrown off the back wheel into the cabin, posing a potential safety risk to the child. This is particularly concerning as it compromises the fundamental safety and comfort features expected of a children’s trailer.
3. Unsuitability for Weather Conditions: While the trailer is not advertised as fully waterproof, it includes a rain cover. It is reasonable to expect basic protection from rain and debris. The substantial gap undermines this expectation, making the trailer unsuitable for its intended purpose.
Customer Service Experience:
AlpineTrek provided commendable customer service by refunding the purchase price as a goodwill gesture after Hamax rejected my complaint. However, the manufacturer’s response, dismissing the complaint and incorrectly suggesting the trailer had been “heavily used,” was was both inaccurate and disappointing.. Their refusal to acknowledge the design flaw raises concerns about product accountability.
Summary:
While the Hamax Children’s Bike Trailer may function adequately in dry, clean conditions, its design flaws make it unreliable and potentially unsafe for wet weather or gravel paths. The wider gap on one side of the front wheel housing compromises safety and comfort. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this product to parents seeking a reliable, all-weather bike trailer. Although the retailer handled the issue well, the manufacturer’s lack of support reflects poorly on the brand.
Rating: 2/5
The trailer’s safety risks and unsuitability for diverse weather conditions overshadow its potential benefits. It is a shame, as this is otherwise a well designed and highly compact trailer. A big thank you to AlpineTrek for their support in this matter.
