The company’s founding: it all started in a garage

Osprey was founded by Mike Pfotenhauer in 1974. At 16 years old, his mother taught him how to sew on an old sewing machine, which allowed him to create his very own backpack. Even back then, the quality of his custom-made backpacks seemed to win over many people, and by word of mouth alone, it quickly turned into an insider’s tip.

Very innovative

Osprey values innovation and was the first backpack manufacturer to take into account the special requirements of the female anatomy and introduced backpacks specially made for women. It was this kind of innovative thinking that resulted in countless advancements for a wide range of uses and customers. The founder continues, just as before, to bring his own know-how and vast wealth of experience spanning almost forty years to the development of backpacks.

Local production 2.0

Osprey has also remained true to its company culture. Until 1987, Osprey only produced small batches at its headquarters in the USA. The company first moved to Colorado in 1994 when it began professional series production.
When they relocated their production to Vietnam in 2003, Pfotenhauer moved with his family to Ho Chi Minh City for four years. He did this to supervise operations and also to ensure the local employees were trained, motivated and their skills developed accordingly. This is the reason why their employees in Asia are able to produce autonomously in their own design centre, in line with Osprey’s strict quality requirements. Today, Osprey’s products are known for their high-quality, practical and clever designs. It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking for a trekking backpack, a daypack for your commute to work, a life-long travel trolley or a kids’ carrier, you'll definitely find what you need at Osprey. The fit, load distribution, practical features, quality and their look will all leave you amazed from the moment you start using any Osprey product!
