I used to use inflatable mats which take up ALOT less space. But they tend to be significantly more expensive, and you need to be more careful with them. This foam mat insulates well in winter, and you can put it down outside or inside your tent without worrying about it getting punctured. It can also be strapped to the outside of your bag, whereas the inflatable mats cannot.
