Functional cross-country ski jackets with greater freedom of movement and breathability

Cross-country ski clothing is confronted with a variety of tasks on the trail. It has to keep skiers warm, quickly wick moisture away from the body and provide solid protection from wind, rain and snow. At the same time, athletic winter clothing must be movement-friendly and aerodynamic. In addition to cross-country ski trousers and socks, base layers and appropriate jackets are the most important parts of cross-country ski clothing.

Under their cross-country ski jackets, winter sports enthusiasts usually wear base layers with long or short sleeves. Over this base layer, a warming mid-layer ensures optimal insulation and good moisture transfer from the base layer to the outside. Elastic and breathable fleece clothing is excellent for this purpose. At higher temperatures, the insulating middle layer could be thinner or even completely omitted.

As an outer layer, cross-country jackets and vests offer protection from wind, moisture and snow. Cross-country ski jackets are either made from synthetic fibre or from high-quality merino wool. Manufacturers such as Maloja, Salomon or adidas also like to use both materials in the same item of clothing. For example, a breathable merino garment may get a windproof cover on its front to offer good wind protection while providing high breathability on its back.

Protection from the wind, rain and snow for cross-country skiers

Windproof jackets with windproof nylon or windproof Gore Windstopper membranes provide the best wind protection on the trail. By reducing the cooling effects of wind chill, thinner, and therefore more movement-friendly, insulation can also guarantee pleasant warmth while cross-country skiing. The insulation material primarily used is padded synthetic fibre such as Primaloft, down and wool or simply merino wool.

Besides breathable softshell jackets and softshell vests & gilets for cross-country skiers, waterproof Gore-Tex jackets are also in demand for very wet weather and heavy snowfall. These hardshell jackets offer comprehensive protection against wind and moisture and are pleasantly breathable. Breathable cross-country ski hats and cross-country ski gloves with a waterproof membrane are also recommended for very wet and windy skiing conditions. In better weather conditions, however, cross-country skiers tend to focus on better breathability properties when choosing suitable clothing, which fleece and softshell clothing offer aplenty.

For men, women and children, winter sports outfitters offer a wide selection of different cross-country jackets that are optimally adapted to the specific needs of men, women, young people and children in terms of cut and material, as well as design.
