Softshell coats - stylish yet functional

Softshell Coats

Modern outdoor coats - and softshell coats are definitely included in that category - are among the most versatile pieces of clothing there is. They are not only super functional, they are also nicely tailored in beautiful designs. For leisure activities, everyday wear or even on the way to work, they are a much better alternative than a coat without any other function.
The layer system used in mountain sports includes a down jacket or synthetic fibre jacket as an insulation layer. Over that, a hardshell jacket serves to protect the wearer from the elements. Translated into daily life, this means a stylish down jacket for warmth or a softshell coat for protection from rain and weather. Like other functional jackets, softshell coats are very versatile. During leisure activities or in everyday life, they replace the rustic character of a rain coat or the overly sporty, technical-looking outdoor jacket.

Fashionable, highly functional and with many practical little details

The elastic softshell outer material makes these stylish coats just as comfortable and functional as softshell jackets meant for outdoor sports. That way you will leave the house both well-protected from wind and rain and perfectly dressed for the occasion.

  • Its material is water-repellent or waterproof, windproof while at the same time remaining breathable. Its hydrostatic head isn't as good as that of a hardshell jacket, but is completely adequate for keeping you high and dry under all circumstances
  • With their longer cut, softshell coats have a larger pack size. But for the conditions they are generally worn in - for example in combination with waterproof trousers as a security against sudden weather changes in the mountains - this is not usually an important consideration. A stylish short coat is the ideal compromise.
  • Some important components a softshell coat should never be without are a protective hood and a lot of pockets. Many models even have a removable hood that also keep the head and ears warm and dry. There should be pockets in suitable places on both the outside and inside of the jacket. That way, hands can be kept toasty warm and a wallet and cell phone are easily stowed.
  • When looking for quality and durable workmanship, one important detail is the zip. A storm flap is a good bonus and it should definitely grip well. Thanks to adjustable cuffs, the coat can be sealed at the extremities, keeping cold winds out.
When you put on a nice softshell coat you'll leave the house looking stylish and ready for anything. Snappy models are available from Outdoor Research, Maloja and Bergans. You will definitely find the right jacket to suit your taste!
